Char DeGia, NCTM, Diving Into a Pool of Sounds

This session will explore the tools and techniques you already know to unlock the joy of
improvising at the keyboard--how to help a student become comfortable with playing away from the score. The material is very accessible--mostly theory and skills that teachers
already know--this just puts it in an easy-to-use sequential order.  Handouts will be given so teachers can work through the process themselves later.  Think how this might be a springboard for something fun and different for students next summer!

Paul Wirth
Preparing for Performance

Dr. Paul Wirth is a prominent figure in our national piano teaching community.  His unique
combination of masterful performing and teaching, along with a sense of humor and unassuming personality have made him a much sought-after featured artist in concerts, master-classes, fund raisers, conventions, special events, and lecture series.  By popular demand, Dr. Wirth returns to Rochester to discuss how to prepare students for performance.

Dr. Paul Wirth:

Artistic Director, Dr. Paul Wirth, is a prominent figure in our national piano teaching community. His unique combination of masterful performing and teaching, along with a sense of humor and unassuming personality have made him a much sought-after featured artist in concerts, master classes, fundraisers, conventions, special events, and lecture series.

With his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Temple University, and his Master and Doctorate degrees in Piano Performance from Indiana University, he co-founded and is now the Artistic Director of the Wirth Center for the Performing Arts (formerly Central Minnesota Music School) in St. Cloud, MN, a bustling performing arts center with over 300 students taught by a faculty of twenty.

Chosen as the 2004-05 Teacher of the Year by Thursday Musical , he has taught numerous first prize-winning students of regional, national and international competitions - with thirty of his pre-college students having performed over seventy solo performances with orchestra, including numerous appearances with the Minnesota and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestras.  In addition to his presentations at conventions and conferences, including the 2007 National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy and statewide conventions in Minnesota, Iowa and Texas, Dr. Wirth’s GRAVI-DVD - a cutting edge DVD on teaching piano technique to children - is now being distributed nationally and internationally.  His masterclasses, most recently at the Cleveland Institute of Music Preparatory Division, are always well received, and his presentations, drawing upon 30 years as a pre-college specialist teaching advanced concepts to 4 -18 year olds, often elicit further engagements.  He is also an avid supporter of young performers, having co-founded the Salon se Lève concert series in Minneapolis and the nationally recognized Young Artist World Piano Festival at Bethel University in St. Paul, MN.

Dr. Wirth maintains three studios: at the Wirth Center for the Performing Arts in St. Cloud, MN, at the Schmitt Music Center in Roseville, MN,  and at his home in St. Joseph, MN where he lives with his wife and greatest support, Kathy Wirth.

Spring Luncheon
The Art of Piano--Great Pianists of the 20th Century

The Spring Luncheon this year will be paired with segments of film from some
of the most fascinating material, historically and musically, from the world's film and television archives.  This will include recorded performances by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Vladimir Horowitz, Josef Hofmann, Glenn Gould, and many more.  We will select a few and be able to go back in time to hear and
see these superb performers.

Hostess Suggestions
Thank you for being willing to volunteer for Keyboard Club in this way!

About one month in advance of the meeting, call the music store to confirm the availability of the room, and that the doors will be open at the prescribed time.  This would be a good time to ask about the coffee--if the store is willing to make it.  Double-check the plans again one or tow days before the meeting.

Usually we need about 2 gallons of something other than coffee to drink as well.

Visiting while drinking means we need finger food, as we stand to eat.  It is nice to have something simple so utensils are not needed.  Usually 20-30 members attend a meeting.

You will need to bring napkins and paper cups.  Our host sites have, in the past, been gracious in offering to start the coffee for us.  Please contact your site host (below) to see if they are willing to do this.
