Teaching Teeny-Weenies: Working with the 3-6 year old Piano Student
The young child at the piano is a treat to see and work with! They revel in new experiences, and their enthusiasm is contagious. Though a child this age may not be able to read, there are still many and numerous techniques for teaching them to play the piano, and even learn to read music. Working with very young children one-on-one inspires us to be on our toes. Working to keep control of the lesson, the child, and the learning means that the teacher’s attention must be constant and focused. There must be many contingency plans for each lesson, depending on the child’s behavior and ability to focus, which may change from lesson to lesson. Strategies for private piano lessons with young children include: physical movement, ear training exercises, constant finger movement, and lots of fun!!
